The iPad 5 is about get a whole lot thinner. The iPad mini 2 will indeed get its Retina Display. And the iPhone 6 will arrive with a sensor under the home button allowing you to use your own fingerprint to log into your favorite apps and websites. Just don, Äôt ask when in 2013 these devices are arriving. Apple, Äôs iPad 4 price cuts pointed to the new generation iPads landing as soon as the end of the month, and rumors point to the new iPhone landing in August. But the same Wall Street tech analyst who, Äôs sharing all of the above details about the new products also says that such arrival timeframes might be too ambitious as Apple continues to work out various aspects of the new products. Regardless of launch timeframe, these details offer the best insight yet into what the iPad 5, iPad mini 2, and iPhone 6 plan to deliver in terms of feature set. Here, Äôs a deeper look.

iPhone 6 : Apple always throws in a blatantly marketable feature with each new iPhone model. While some reports peg the iPhone 6 as coming in two or three sizes, we still suspect a new software based feature would be included (think Siri). And while the fingerprint sensor does rely on a hardware chip, the user impact comes in the form of software. Everything from your Facebook password to your autolock passcode can be tied to your fingerprint. It, Äôll save you from having to repeatedly type any password which you consider low priority, and it means thieves will have a hard time being able to do much of anything at all with your stolen iPhone 6, taking away their motivation to steal it in the first place. It, Äôs not yet clear whether the technology will also debut on the iPad 5 or iPad mini 2, but each new tablet has its own tricks in store.

iPad mini 2 : This one has been predictable since the original iPad mini debuted last year. It was the only product across Apple, Äôs entire iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch lineup which didn, Äôt include a highest-possible-quality Retina Display screen. That move was presumably to keep would-be iPad 4 buyers from being too tempted by the significantly lower priced mini. But now it appears the iPad mini 2 will give up any such pretense and join the retina ranks. That means the iPad 5 must have its own set of tricks up its sleeve to justify its higher price point, and it will.

iPad 5 : While the iPad 2 moved to curved siding and got significantly thinner than its predecessor, each of the two most recent iPad generations has been roughly as bulky as the last. That, Äôs set to change with the iPad 5, which will slim down not by shrinking its interior components but instead by making the entire front face thinner. That points to more durable material being used which doesn, Äôt have to be as thick to be as effective. One wonder whether the acrylic plastic on the face of iPads 1-4 may be on its way out with the iPad 5. This in turn poses the potential for the iPhone 5S to use the same newer, thinner front face technology to slim down as well. But if it does make that kind of noticeable change to its front facing material, then it wouldn, Äôt really be an iPhone 5S.
